I wasn't in school yesterday. I was absent. I was visiting my grandparents. They have a beautiful farm in the country. The farmhouse is beautiful, too. It's not very big, but it's very nice. My mother was born there. My grandfather was born there, too.

My grandparents are getting old now, but they're still working. My grandfather's about sixty. He's still farming. My grandmother's still taking care of the house. She's a very good cook. I always have a good time there. I always like to see my grandparents and I like to eat, too----especially Grandmother's cookies.

Henry Lane is Mrs. Norris's father. He and his wife have lived on a farm all their lives. In these sentences Mr. Lane speaks.

My name's Henry Lane. My friends all call me Hank. My wife's name is Ruth. Please let me show you around our farm. Our farmhouse isn't large, but it's very nice. That's the barn down there. We keep the horses and cows there. We have fifteen cows and six horses. Right now we have three calves. This is the chicken house. We have two roosters and twenty hens. We have a few ducks and turkeys, too, We always have enough eggs for the family. We don't have any pigs. But we have about a dozen sheep. That's the pasture. And those are the fields over there. We grow fruits and vegetables. We also grow wheat and corn. We like to farm. Farming is a healthy life.
